Carnagill Primary School was rated as "inadequate" by Ofsted seven years ago

A primary school in North Yorkshire previously rated as "inadequate" by inspectors had been "transformed" in recent years, a watchdog said.

Carnagill Primary School in Catterick Garrison was rated as "outstanding" for early years provision and "good" in all other areas after Ofsted representatives visited in January.

The school was judged as "inadequate" in 2018, but the watchdog said its leaders had prompted significant changes since then.

Headteacher Louise Newport told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the ratings "acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our entire school community".

Ofsted described the school's curriculum as "ambitious" and said it excelled in supporting students' personal needs, including those with special educational needs and disabilities and pupils who spoke English as a second language.

It said the school had also created an inclusive and respectful environment where children demonstrated "an exceptional understanding of equality".

In areas for improvement, inspectors said opportunities for pupils to understand fundamental British values were not as effective as they should be.

The school became an academy in 2020 as part of the Dales Academies Trust.

Damian Chub, trust chief executive, said: "We are immensely proud of the progress made.

"This strong Ofsted report reflects the dedication and hard work of the headteacher and the entire school community."
