Fife Council has launched an investigation after a boy went missing from a primary school and was found in a nearby park.

It is understood that the pupil left Pittencrieff Primary School on Maitland Street in Dunfermline at about 12:30 on Wednesday.

The local authority said once staff noticed he was missing, the boy was found within five minutes at Pittencrieff Park.

A spokesperson said his family and the wider school community were "quickly informed".

Karen Lees, Fife Council's education manager, said: "On Wednesday, a school child briefly left the school grounds and was located a short time later in Pittencrieff Park.

"Staff acted immediately upon noticing the child was missing, and the child was found safe and well within five minutes.

"We will conduct a full review of the circumstances to ensure this does not happen again. The safety and wellbeing of children in our care remains our highest priority."
