Islanders given chance to learn life-saving skills

Islanders have been learning life-saving skills at an annual event in Jersey.

The government of Jersey said the Restart a Heart Day initiative, led by the Resuscitation Council (UK), took place on Wednesday at a stall on Broad Street between 09:00 BST and 14:00.

Officials said CPR and defibrillation techniques were taught by the States of Jersey Ambulance Service and the Health and Community Services Resuscitation Service.

Katie Campbell, clinical tutor for the ambulance service, said the initiative "builds confidence to do the right thing in an emergency".

​“Early CPR and defibrillation can double the chances of survival for someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest," she said.

"It is important as many people as possible know what to do in an emergency. Restart a Heart Day is a brilliant initiative that spreads awareness."

She said it only takes about one minute to learn CPR, adding it "is very simple".

Ms Campbell said islanders were "getting involved" in the initiative on Wednesday.

"It's brilliant to see everybody getting involved and learning," she said.

"And, maybe getting a little bit of the fear gone as well so that we can have members of the public feel who feel confident enough that they can do CPR if somebody does suffer a cardiac arrest in front of them."
