A man has been charged after a woman and child were injured following an alleged assault.

Durham Police said officers were called to reports of an "ongoing domestic incident at a house" in Grainger Street, Darlington, shortly after 21:40 BST on Wednesday.

The woman and 17-month-old were taken to hospital for treatment, where the child remains in a stable condition.

The 32-year-old man from Darlington was charged with assault occasioning actual body harm and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Appearing before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on Friday, he did not enter any pleas and was remanded in custody.

He will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on 20 September.
