A key stretch of a bypass between Gloucester and Cheltenham will be closed this weekend for works.

The A40 Golden Valley bypass westbound carriageway will be closed between M5 junction 11 and Elmbridge Court roundabout for resurfacing.

The section of the carriageway will close from 20:00 GMT on Friday to 06:00 GMT on Monday.

National Highways said the resurfacing scheme will improve safety and reduce the need for unplanned repair closures.

After the carriageway has reopened, the full section between Elmbridge Court and Arle Court roundabouts will close overnight from 20:00 GMT to 06:00 GMT between Monday and 19 November.

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

During the weekend closure, drivers will be able to access Cheltenham via M5 junction 11, or Gloucester via the B4063 diversion or from junction 11A.

On weeknights, drivers exiting the M5 at junction 11 will be able to join the A40 but in the eastbound direction only, with diversion routes also in place for HGVs.

National Highways Project Manager Kevin Gibbs said: “To minimise disruption, we’re carrying out the work on the one weekend and weeknights when traffic flows are at their lowest.

“We understand that road closures can be frustrating, we’re keeping the closures to an absolute minimum and we thank all drivers in advance for their co-operation and patience while we carry out these essential works."
