A family has paid tribute to a "beloved dad" who died in a crash in Scarborough.

Nick Alves, 38, had been driving a brown Honda Jazz at about 21:00 GMT on Friday 31 October when the car hit street furniture on Scalby Road, according to North Yorkshire Police.

In a statement, family members expressed their "deepest gratitude" to those who stayed at the scene to help Mr Alves following the crash, saying: "Words cannot describe how much that kindness meant to us."

Officers appealed for anyone who saw what happened, or who had CCTV or dashcam footage from the scene, to get in touch.

In their statement, the family of Mr Alves said they had been left "devastated" by the death of "our beloved son, dad, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, and friend".

"We simply cannot imagine life without Nick in it," they said.

"Nick joined the navy straight after leaving school and travelled the world, meeting incredible people and experiencing amazing places.

"After leaving the navy, he settled in Scarborough to be close to his family."

Anyone who saw what happened at the time of the crash was also asked to get in touch with North Yorkshire Police.
