Bradford Council aims to eventually support electric charging across 1,000 bays in the district

Dozens of electric vehicle charging points will be installed across the Bradford district after central funding was secured.

Bradford Council has been given £282,000 by the government to install 104 new bays across 33 sites, with American firm Blink Charging delivering the infrastructure.

The majority of these chargers will be on-street, with the locations focused on areas with "limited off-street parking".

More charging points will be installed in the future, the local authority said, with a wider project aiming to create up to 1,000 charging points over 230 locations.

The funding of £282,000 was secured by Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority after a joint bid to the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council's executive member for healthy people and places, said the council is "continuing to take steps forward to ensure that there is adequate cost-effective charging facilities" available in the district.

There will be no financial implications on the council's budget, she added, as it is funded via grants.

West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin said: "These new charge points closer to home will bring huge benefits to people without off-street parking and contribute to improving air quality in our communities.

"Investing in electric vehicle chargers that are safe, reliable and easy to use will help us build a greener, better-connected West Yorkshire that works for all."
