A two-year-old boy who is "obsessed" with watching bin crews on their rounds has been able to meet his heroes, his mother has said.

Teddy was allowed to sit in the lorry cab and was given a toy recycling truck by the waste workers in Tameside after his mum Pam asked the council if he could meet the crew.

Pam, a school catering manager from Ashton, said watching the crew take away brown recycling bins each Thursday morning had become "the highlight of his week".

She said the crew would "always wave and smile at him and the driver has even gone to the trouble of jumping out of the cab and running over to Teddy to fist-bump with him and high-five".

Pam said: "I just think it's really lovely of them.

"They work so hard but they always still have a smile and wave and little bit of effort goes a long way."

The crew of Kevin Rogers, Tom Ashcroft and driver Ian Bayley also gave Teddy a toy bin.

She said her son's fixation with the weekly round spurred her on to ask the council if he could meet the crew.

"My little man is obsessed with them! They are his heroes and I just wanted the chance to say thank you to them for everything they do."

The crew even allowed Teddy to help them bring the bins to the truck this week.

Laura Boyle, executive member for environmental services for Tameside Council, said: "It's always so heart-warming to hear how our crews make a difference in the local community and I'm sure that smiles and waves from Teddy helps to make their day just as much as they make his.

"They are a fantastic bunch and it's lovely for them to get some recognition for their community spirit as well as their hard work."
