Police have launched a murder inquiry in a village after the death of a man in his 70s.

Detectives were called to a property in Garsington, near Oxford, shortly after 22:00 GMT on Sunday.

The man was found with a serious head injury at the address in Oxford Road and died in hospital earlier on Tuesday, Thames Valley Police said.

A 40-year-old man from Garsington, who was previously arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and assaulting a police officer, has been rearrested on suspicion of murder, the force added.

Det Insp Alice Broad said: "I understand that incidents such as this are tragic events and I recognise the concern this will cause in the local community.

"However, we are confident that there is no wider risk to the community and that the victim and offender are known to each other."

She said officers would remain on the scene for some time while the investigation continues.
