An actress who won a Laurence Olivier award for her role in a West End show has celebrated getting engaged to one of her co-stars.

Amy Trigg, 32, said she was "laughing, smiling and jumping up and down" after being proposed to by Jordan Benjamin in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.

The pair fell in love while rehearsing for musical The Little Big Things, which saw Trigg, from Witham, named best actress in a supporting role at the Olivier Awards.

"I got on one knee and it hit me like a whirlwind, I felt so lucky and it was absolutely incredible," said Benjamin, who now performs in Hamilton.

The 24-year-old said popping the question on Sunday felt right due to the "really special" family memories Trigg had there.

Jordan Benjamin wrote his proposal song in February, despite only having known Amy Trigg for about half a year

Having enjoyed fish and chips together, Benjamin grabbed his guitar and performed a song he had written specially for the moment.

"It felt out of body," he said.

"Throughout that whole thing I felt like I was a third person watching a really happy couple getting engaged."

'Very special'

The actor added Trigg's parents had scouted out the area in the days prior to the proposal, finding the perfect bench that looked out to sea.

"We spent a lot of time there when I was younger, playing rounders on the green, having birthdays on the beach - It's a really special place," said Trigg.

"As soon as Jordan got his guitar I couldn’t stop laughing, smiling and jumping up and down. I was very overwhelmed."

The couple met while rehearsing for The Little Big Things, which has been on show in London's West End

The couple said their friendship blossomed into love due to the "intense" close nature of rehearsing for The Little Big Things last year.

The musical is based on the memoir of Henry Fraser, who became a mouth artist after being paralysed from the shoulders down following an accident aged 17.

In the show, Trigg played his physiotherapist and Benjamin played his younger brother.

"It’s very special. They are two very special people themselves, incredibly kind and generous," Fraser said.

"People like to give me the credit for things, but these things happen and they just happened to meet in a show that was based on my story.

"I’m just super happy for them. It’s very cool."
