Man jailed for attempting to strangle partner

A man who strangled his partner twice and tried to hit her with a brick has been jailed for three and a half years.

A row broke out while William Gray, 31, of North Brink, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was at the victim's house on 17 July and she asked him to leave.

Gray grabbed her by the throat twice and pushed and thumped her, Cambridge Crown Court heard.

He denied charges of intentional strangulation, actual bodily harm, making threats to kill and two counts of criminal damage, but was found guilty.

The court was told the victim managed to push Gray out of the house and lock the door, but he threw a brick at the fence and started kicking the door, according to Cambridgeshire Police.

When she opened the door to stop it being damaged, Gray pushed her back into the bedroom and tried to hit her in the face with the brick.

He also damaged a mirror, but left before officers arrived.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

Gray was arrested in Greatford, Lincolnshire, on 12 December.

Det Sgt Lee Lombardo said: “Gray’s disgraceful behaviour left the victim very fearful, but hopefully this sentence will give her some peace of mind.

“Tackling domestic abuse is a force priority and we will always help to put perpetrators in jail.”

Gray was also given a 10 year restraining order.
