Castle Cornet will host a beacon to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day next month.

Beacons will be lit to commemorate the World War Two landings across the British Isles as well as at the five beaches in Normandy where the historic battles took place.

Guernsey's Lieutenant-Governor Richard J Cripwell will light the beacon at 21:15 BST on 6 June in a private ceremony for islanders involved in organising the annual Liberation Day celebrations.

Helen Glencross, head of Heritage Services, said: "It is an honour to be able to join the rest of the country in marking such a significant occasion, and we are pleased to have been able to invite people central to our Liberation Day celebrations – a closely linked part of our community’s history - to the event."

The beacon will be visible from outside the castle walls and will be livestreamed on social media.

Mrs Glencross said: "The bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories."
