A street will be permanently closed to traffic following resident feedback.

Cavendish Street in Ipswich, Suffolk, has been closed to through traffic at the junction with White Elm Street since November 2022.

Suffolk County Council said a survey "demonstrated a strong consensus" to make the traffic regulation order (TRO) restrictions permanent.

Conservative councillor Richard Smith said it was a "positive step towards making our streets safer".

In 2020, residents requested an "experimental" TRO to prevent rat-running through the road.

As a result, a temporary closure was enforced along the street, splitting Cavendish Road into two parts.

The council said the permanent scheme would be constructed later in 2024, but the temporary restriction would remain in place in the meantime.

"This outcome is a great example of community engagement making a real impact on policy," Mr Smith said.

He added the restrictions would be "more accommodating to multiple styles of travel", in line with the council's plans to "look after the health and well-being of our residents, and to protect and enhance our environment".
