A thief who is banned from every store in a city centre has been jailed for 14 weeks.

Liam Ellison, 35, cannot enter any retail premises in Sunderland city centre as part of a three-year court order he received in October 2022.

However, he broke the conditions when he went into Deichmann at the Bridges Shopping Centre on 20 April.

Sgt Dave Catton, of Northumbria Police, said Ellison, of no fixed address, had been "a drain on police resources" and had been causing "misery" to businesses and shoppers.

Ellison, who is also banned from having any open bottle, can, container or vessel of alcohol in a public place, apart from inside a licenced premises, was charged with breaching his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

He was sentenced at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Monday.
