The chief executive of a homelessness charity said it was "back to square one" after thieves targeted it for the second time in six months.

The burglary at Emmaus Cambridge took place on 27 February and 17 pieces of equipment, including power tools, were taken from its workshop.

The charity, which is based in Landbeach, had only just been able to replace items stolen in the previous break-in in August, it said.

Cambridgeshire Police said forensic officers attended the scene after it was told about the overnight burglary and no arrests had been made.

"Hearing this news was heart-wrenching," said chief executive Donna Talbot.

"We are a small charity with a small staff team and it has taken us weeks to find, order and wait for the delivery of the replacement items.

"Just as we thought the end was in sight, we are back to square one.”

Emmaus Cambridge supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing shelter for as long as they need it and meaningful work in its social enterprises, including Joan's Coffee Shop and a second-hand shop.

It is currently supporting nearly 50 people, referred to as companions, who often sell upcycled items made in its workshop, where they learn woodcraft and carpentry skills.

The charity had enhanced its security arrangements following the August burglary, including by installing a security camera.

This time, there was extensive damage to a window, internal door and access gate.

Ms Talbot said the charity was working to replace the items as quickly as it could, alongside introducing further safety measures.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “We were contacted on 27 February, with reports of a burglary overnight at Emmaus Cambridge in Green End, Landbeach.

“Thieves broke into the premises and stole power tools.

"Officers, including those trained in forensics, attended the scene. No arrests have been made.”
