School plans to build Spitfire heritage centre
- Published
A Worcestershire school, built on a former RAF airfield, has developed plans to create a Spitfire heritage centre to commemorate the World War Two fighter plane.
Tudor Grange Primary Academy in Perdiswell has said plans, driven by its pupils, are at an early stage.
Principal Rachel Hughes said she would be open to visits from schools from across the county but could potentially also open to members of the public.
She said: "We are really looking forward to seeing how this develops into a heritage centre benefitting not only the children of Perdiswell but from across Worcestershire."
Drama teacher Gavin Coles added: "The children are really excited about this. It is part of their history.
"A lot of them live in the area and they have been speaking about the war with their relatives."
The airfield at Perdiswell Park, where the school was built, was already in existence before the Second World War but was requisitioned by the RAF in 1938 and renamed RAF Worcester.
After the war, a Spitfire was used as a gate guard at Perdiswell Park throughout the 1950s and 60s.
