A man and a woman have been arrested following a fire at a derelict wine bar in Stoke-on-Trent.

Firefighters were called just after 5.45 GMT on Tuesday to Brockley Square, Hanley, and a cordon remained in place overnight and throughout the day on Wednesday.

A 63-year-old man, of no fixed address and a 33-year-old woman, from Stoke-on-Trent, were arrested on suspicion of attempted arson with intent to endanger life, Staffordshire Police said.

Both were released on conditional bail while inquiries continued.

The cause of the fire was yet to be decided.

The fire service said it would carry out an investigation when it was safe to do so.

They added crews were working to scale down the cordon and bring the incident to an end.
