Nurse died after being kicked by horse - inquest

- Published
An inquest has found that a chief nurse died from injuries she suffered when she was kicked by a horse.
Sam Young, 58, had been leading the horse towards an open gate at Platt Mill Stables in Boreatton, Shropshire on 19 June, when it bolted sideways and kicked her with both legs in her chest.
Heath Westerman, assistant coroner for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, heard that despite the efforts of medics, Ms Young did not respond to CPR and died at the scene. A verdict of accidental death was recorded.
Ms Young lived in nearby Baschurch and was the interim chief nursing officer at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH), near Oswestry.
Shortly after her death, the hospital's chief executive, Stacey Keegan, said the news had "come as a huge shock to colleagues across the organisation".
She said Ms Young was "held in extremely high regard by everyone at RJAH thanks to her excellent clinical knowledge, her absolute dedication to patient care, but most notably the quality of her character".
