A driver who led police on a 100mph car chase through York before crashing their vehicle into metal railings has been arrested.

Officers were called to the Acomb area of the city at about 23:10 BST on Monday after receiving reports of a car being driven "suspiciously".

North Yorkshire Police said as a patrol car approached the area a Vauxhall Insignia drove towards them at speed along Holgate Road and on towards the city.

The driver then sped off, reaching speeds of 100mph and driving on the wrong side of the road, before crashing on the approach to the roundabout at Askham Bar.

Police said the driver had tried to flee on foot, but was chased down and detained by officers.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the incident on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis.
