Revamp of square by crooked church spire to start

Work to revamp a square next to Chesterfield's landmark crooked church spire is to get under way next month.

Chesterfield Town Council said it wanted to landscape Rykneld Square, near St Mary and All Saints Parish Church, by adding new grassy areas and more plants as well as replacing existing paving.

The project will start on Monday 7 July and is part of the authority's £10.28m Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield scheme to regenerate the wider town centre.

The council said it wanted to modernise the area and make it more welcoming for residents and visitors.

Council cabinet member Kate Sarvent said: "There will be some disruption arising from these works, but we are working with our contractor and updating local businesses to try and minimise the impact.

"Once completed, this will be a fantastic new space for Chesterfield residents and visitors to enjoy."

The council said access through the square would be limited during the work, and part of the Spa Lane car park would be closed for use as a construction compound.

It said the project was due to be completed by late October.
