Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the semi-detached property in Milton Road, Warley, Brentwood, at about 13:00 GMT on Friday.
A spokeswoman for the service said the blaze was contained to the house, which was close to Brentwood train station, and there would be an investigation into its cause.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire inside the house, while firefighters on an aerial ladder worked to extinguish it from above.
Nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed, due to the amount of billowing smoke.
Nearby Firsgrove Road was also shut during the operation to put out the blaze.
