Shots fired at the window of a house with children inside could have had "catastrophic consequences", detectives said.
Merseyside Police said a 28-year-old man had been arrested after the shooting in Acanthus Road, Old Swan, in Liverpool at about 15.50 GMT on Saturday.
The force said no-one was injured but damage was caused to a window.
Detectives are trying to trace two men, wearing black clothes, seen heading in the direction of Doric Road, at the time of the incident.
Det Ch Insp Andy McCourt said: "Thankfully no one was injured, but this firearms discharge could have had catastrophic consequences.
"There were people inside the house, including children, so clearly this could have been much worse."
He urged anyone with information to get in touch.
