The old library building in Melksham is being demolished

Work to demolish and clear the site of an old library is underway.

The land on Lowbourne in Melksham, Wiltshire, was home to the town's library until 2022, when it moved to a new community campus.

The adjacent Lowbourne car park will remain open throughout the work, which will take around eight weeks.

Councillor Tamara Reay, cabinet member for assets at Wiltshire Council, said: "Unfortunately, the site has been a target for anti-social behaviour so the demolition work should help mitigate this."

The council hopes the site will eventually be turned into housing for older people.

Councillor Reay added: “This site, located in the heart of the town, has huge potential so we’re pleased to start the process on the ground to bring it back into use."

Any plans drawn up for the site will be subject to planning permission.
