Alderney Ferry Services will not run a service between Alderney and Guernsey through the winter due to "the amount of bad weather systems" the route is facing, bosses say.

The ferry service had been receiving a subsidy from the States of Alderney through the summer, but that came to an end on 26 September.

Charlie Smith, AFS co-director, told the BBC that there had been "22 weather days" in September and only "one or two people" had booked on for the final few days of the service's season.

AFS said it would continue to run charters and would produce a schedule for 2026 in the near future.

"We have decided to finish our scheduled season early… unlike last year, we will not be running a schedule through the winter.

"The amount of bad weather systems constantly coming through since the end of August doesn't make winter look hopeful for small vessels to operate," she said.
