Man fined £2k for fly-tipping garden waste in lane

A fly-tipper has been ordered to pay a fine of £2,000 and costs of a further £2,000 for leaving garden waste in a lane near Plymouth.
In December Steven Hawken from Plymouth, a director of Ace Plant Hire and GroundWork Services Ltd, pleaded guilty in Plymouth Crown Court to fly-tipping controlled waste on Vinery Lane, Plympton, without an environmental permit.
On Wednesday Hawken was also told to pay £100 of compensation to South Hams District Council and Ace Plant was ordered to pay a £100 fine and £100 to the council for clearing the waste.
Hawken was told he would be imprisoned for three months if he did not pay within 12 months.
Councillor Victor Abbott, the council's lead on community services, said: "I hope this successful prosecution sends a strong message out to anyone tempted to illegally dump their waste that we will take action."
