Residents had to be evacuated from a block of flats in Surrey after a fire started in an electrical cupboard.

The blaze broke out in the six-storey building by Monument Hill in Weybridge at about 09:50 GMT, Surrey Fire & Rescue said.

At its height, there were eight fire engines at the scene and nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

Residents were evacuated as a "precaution" but everyone was accounted for, said firefighters.

Police and ambulance services attended the scene, but there were no casualties.

The fire was extinguished just after 12:00 GMT, with one fire engine remaining at the scene.

Surrey Fire & Rescue said the fire was in an electrical cupboard.

A spokesperson said: "While the electricity company carries out checks and remedial work in the building, residents are being supported at a respite centre by the local authority."
