A cyclist has been taken to hospital after being stabbed repeatedly in a "violent and terrifying" machete attack.

Merseyside Police said it was called to Brownlow Hill in Liverpool city centre at 15:00 BST to reports of an attempted robbery by two men with a machete on an electric bike.

The victim, who was riding a mountain bike that the suspects allegedly tried to steal, was taken to hospital with "several stab wounds".

The suspects rode away from the scene towards Grove Street, and were last seen on Mason Street, the force said.

'Violent and terrifying'

Police said they were in the area conducting door-to-door enquiries, forensic examinations and looking for CCTV footage.

Ch Insp Gillian Kearns urged any potential witnesses to come forward.

She said: "We are in the early stages of investigating what was a violent and terrifying attack on a young man who was assaulted and left with serious injuries after two offenders attempted to steal his bike.

“If you were on Brownlow Hill or Duckinfield Street and saw the attack or these two suspects riding an electric motorbike this afternoon please contact us."

CI Kearns also urged anyone who may have seen the suspects on Grove Street or Mason Street to get in touch.

"Information from our community is also vital if we are to stop such violent crimes that cause fear in our communities," she added.
