Investigation as man dies in fire at his flat

A man in his 70s has died in a fire at his flat in Nottinghamshire, it has been confirmed.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said emergency services went to the blaze in Park Avenue, Mansfield, at 00:42 BST on Monday, after residents of another flat saw smoke coming through the stairwell.

The fire was found to be in the basement of the building, where the man was discovered.

A joint police and fire investigation is ongoing to establish the cause.

Fire service group manager Leigh Holmes said: "We would like to send our sincere condolences to the gentleman's friends and family at this incredibly sad time.

"We will continue to work with our partners to establish the cause of this fire, and in the coming days we will ensure to visit local residents to offer them reassurance and fire safety advice.

"Thank you to the local community for their patience and cooperation."
