A dead "horse" that was dumped in a waste recycling centre was actually a deer, North Yorkshire Police said.

Workers at the site in Ripon alerted officers to what was thought to be the carcass of a horse or pony, with the force appealing for information on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, police said: "Following further investigations, the animal remains have been identified as a deer. We are no longer appealing for information."

North Yorkshire Council's website states: "Dead animals cannot be accepted at any of our household waste recycling centres."
