A night-bus service has been praised for helping contribute to a reduction in reports of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and sexual offences to the police.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the Newquay night-bus had been used by more than 740 people to get home safely on Saturday nights.

The service ran from 24 May to 6 September this year and was introduced to help tackle drink driving offences as well as ASB and violence against women and girls.

Police said it saw a 50% reduction in public order and sexual offences reported in the town.

'Deter opportunist offenders'

PS Dave Flynn said he was pleased so many people were able to make use of the service which has helped "prevent, deter and reduce crime".

"It is fantastic to see these reductions in reported crime and that the night bus has been a contributing factor in helping to make the nightlife in Newquay safer," he said.

Insp Steve Johnson, who heads up the neighbourhood police teams in the area, said the bus had been a great addition to the busy weekends during the summer months.

He said it complemented the high visibility patrols its officers carried out at peak times to deter "opportunist offenders" whilst also providing a reassurance to those enjoying their night out.

The service was set up by the police and funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner with support from Cornwall Council, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Newquay BID - it was provided by First Bus.

Police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez said: "The reason my office funds the night buses is to achieve greater safety and a reduction in ASB.

"Enjoying a night out shouldn't come at a cost of being a victim or witness of crime or disorder.

"We all want a safe and thriving evening and night time economy."
