A 29-year-old man has died following a crash on the A2 near Rochester, Kent Police said.
Police said the black Volkswagen Tiguan had been travelling on the coastbound carriageway near the A289 slip road when it crashed with a central barrier and a bridge parapet.
The crash led to road closures in both directions between the M2 and the A227, but they have since reopened.
South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene, where the man was pronounced dead. His next of kin has been informed.
Officers are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage in relation to the crash.
In a statement issued earlier on Thursday, National Highways said: "A specialist structural engineer is also at scene assessing the bridge supports which were also struck in the collision".
It previously said the car had crashed into two lamp-posts and bridge supports.
It is understood a lamp-post was knocked down in the collision.
The closure between the A227 at Gravesend and junction 1 of the M2 at Rochester, which started in the early hours on Thursday, was lifted at about 12:00 BST.
Kent Highways said one lane would remain closed on the coastbound carriageway to allow for barrier repair works, but delays in the area were starting to clear.
It added that there were delays of up to an hour and about four miles of congestion on the westbound carriageway approaching junction one of the M2.
Diversion routes were in place for drivers.
