A major roadworks project on a dual carriageway between Leicester and Nottingham has a new expected completion date.

The upgrade of the A46 from Six Hills to Widmerpool, which began in September, is set to be completed in August, National Highways confirmed on Monday.

Split into six phases, the £16.4m scheme was originally due to finish in spring but poor weather pushed this date back.

A 40mph speed limit was put in place along the almost six mile stretch (9.6km) as resurfacing works were completed.

National Highways said the scheme would "prolong the life of the A46" and make journeys "safer and smoother".

A spokesperson said: "We’re coming towards the end of our essential maintenance scheme and expect this section of A46 to be fully open in August.

"We’re currently working in Phase 5 as well as completing the final elements of phases 2 and 3. To minimise disruption, we’re working overnight when the A46 is at its quietest."

With work on the southbound carriageway almost complete, the normal speed limit has been reinstated.

However, there remains a 40mph speed limit on the northbound carriageway while work continues.
