Derelict pub to be turned into specialist housing

New specialist housing complex will replace the Wheatsheaf Pub on Eastfield Road

A plan to convert a former pub into specialist supported housing has been approved by a council.

An application was submitted to Peterborough City Council on behalf of Squirrel Wood Properties to redevelop The Wheatsheaf on Eastfield Road, Peterborough.

Sixteen one-bedroom units, split between 12 apartments and four bungalows, and 11 parking spaces, have been proposed at the site to meet the "increasing demand for such accommodation” in the area.

The pub, which will also undergo demolition as part of the plans, underwent restoration work in 2019 before closing down later that year

The application received some objections from people living in the area, which included concerns that the loss of the traditional public house building would be detrimental to the character of the area and it could increase traffic around Eastfield Road.

According to the planning statement, the accommodation is planned for residents with a range of disabilities to "help them lead an independent life in with access to on-site support as and when required".

It has been proposed that about six employees would work for the site.

The plans for the specialised accommodation were approved by the city council on Wednesday.
