Three people have been arrested after a man was hit by a car at a picket line outside a nuclear site.

It happened outside the Calder Gate entrance to Sellafield, in Cumbria, shortly before 09:00 BST.

Cumbria Constabulary said the man had been taken to West Cumberland Hospital with serious injuries.

Police said there was no wider threat to the public and they would be liaising with organisers of the industrial action to offer reassurance.

Unite the Union members at Sellafield began four days of industrial action on Monday over pay and "the refusal to increase Sellafield-specific allowances".

The union said construction workers at other nuclear projects received pay premiums that contractors at Sellafield did not match.

Sellafield Ltd previously said it did not directly employ those taking part in the action, but "safety and security" would continue to be its priority throughout the strike.

Staff taking part include electricians, joiners, pipe-fitters, riggers, welders and groundworkers.
