A man who forced his way into an elderly woman’s home before stealing her handbag has been jailed for five years.

Neil Hunter, 43, admitted a charge of burglary at Grimsby Crown Court following the incident in the Littlefield area of the town in April.

Police said Hunter, of Firsby Crescent, Grimsby, had attempted to distract his victim before taking her bag, which contained cash.

The woman was not injured, but was left shaken by the incident, Humberside Police said.

Speaking at the conclusion of the case, Det Sgt Terry Mellors described Hunter as "a deceitful criminal".

He said Hunter had targeted a vulnerable member of the community and stolen her personal belongings for his own personal gain.

“Nobody should be made to feel afraid in their own home and we take all reports of this nature incredibly seriously," the detective added.
