The seafront strategy could include the pedestrianisation of Sea Road in Felixstowe

Plans to pedestrianise a seafront road could be tried out as part of a council's vision to boost tourism.

Sea Road in Felixstowe, Suffolk, could go car-free as part of a development strategy in the town.

A report said "several short-term projects" - including lighting "enhancements" on the promenade - would "create a beautiful, welcoming environment".

East Suffolk councillors will be asked to support the proposals at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

After a trial, the pedestrianisation of Sea Road could become "permanent either fully or partially", said a report by Tim Wilson, a Green councillor with a responsibility for economic development.

"The continued vitality of the businesses in this area is compromised by the poor streetscape and the dominance of vehicles, both parked and moving," the report added.

Proposals also include revamping the lights in four seafront shelters, new signs and improvements between the promenade and Manor Terrace, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"These developments will help to secure a continuing viable tourism destination and make the seafront and the Felixstowe area a desirable place to live work and visit all year round," the report said.

If councillors back the strategy, it is hoped it could happen by the end of the 2027/28 financial year.

Meanwhile, East Suffolk Council wants funding for a "heritage attraction" at a Martello Tower built in 19th Century as coastal defence during the Napoleonic Wars.

The strategy document also outlines longer-term projects, including new uses for the Edwardian gardens, enhancements to Martello Park and a resident parking scheme on the seafront.
