A man who killed another man during a row that followed a New Year's Eve house party has been jailed for manslaughter.

Alberto Ursu, 38, was found with a severe knife wound on Essex Street in Rochdale at about 02:40 GMT on 1 January and died soon afterwards in hospital, Greater Manchester Police said.

Also injured, Hassan Suliman, from Rochdale, fled the scene and was later found collapsed nearby, with police learning he had earlier been fighting with Mr Ursu. Weapons used in that altercation were forensically linked to both men.

Suliman, 31, was found guilty of manslaughter last month following a trial at Manchester Crown Court. He was jailed on Friday to 13 years plus three years on licence.

Det Sgt Helen Hitchen said: "This was meant to be a happy night celebrating the New Year but sadly ended in the tragic loss of a life.

"This case just goes to show the devastating consequences of knife crime and its lasting impacts on lives. A man lost his life and will never return to his family."

She said she hoped Suliman's sentence "brings some measure of closure to Alberto's family".
