Further arrests as police tackle planned disorder

Cumbria police put in place a dispersal order on Wednesday among fears of planned disorder

Three more people have been arrested by police trying to quell potential unrest after a wave of rioting around the country.

Cumbria police in Carlisle arrested a 16-year-old boy from Penrith on suspicion of breach of a dispersal order; an 18-year-old from Carlisle on suspicion of possession of cannabis; and a 33-year-old man from Sunderland on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Earlier, three men had also been arrested over online posts encouraging violence and public disorder.

The arrests came after the force was granted a Section 60 order that allowed it to stop and search people suspected of causing or planning trouble.

All of those arrested, except for the 16-year-old, remain in custody.

Ch Supt Carl Patrick said officers had been out across the city to "keep our communities safe".

"Our proactive actions and the support of our communities have resulted in no significant disorder taking place," he added.

He said the arrests sent a "clear message" that police would act upon harmful online content.
