Ugly or wow? Plans for fire-hit pub divide locals

Designs to replace a burnt-down seafront pub have been branded a "futuristic monstrosity" and an "abomination" by some locals.

The Osborne View in Hill Head, near Fareham, was wrecked by fire in February 2024 following an electrical fault in a tumble dryer.

A planning application by owner Hall and Woodhouse has received dozens of comments, most of which are in support of the modern design but some with concerns.

If approved, the new four-storey building would have a beach bar on the lowest level, with a restaurant, bar and staff accommodation on the floors above.

There are more than 50 public comments on the application, submitted to Fareham Borough Council in November last year - 32 in support, 21 objections and four who have suggested changes.

One comment said: "Wow, out of the ashes rises the phoenix."

But others raised concerns about increased noise, parking and litter, calling the designs "ugly", "radical" and "very out of place with the surrounding architecture".

The application said 28 full-time jobs would be created.

Hall and Woodhouse said it wanted to maximise sea views with large windows and for the building to have a contemporary, modern style.

Mackenzie Wheeler's brief was to create a sustainable, multi-occasion venue that boosts Hill Head for locals and tourists.

A decision is expected by 3 March.
