Two hundred people have been arrested as part of an investigation into violent disorder in Staffordshire during the summer.

Staffordshire Police said the 200th suspect was arrested on Monday in connection with the unrest in Stoke-on-Trent and Tamworth in August.

A total of 65 people have been charged and the combined sentence for those jailed for their part in the disorder stood at more than 75 years, the force confirmed.

Twelve people have been convicted but are yet to be sentenced and about 70 suspects remained under investigation.

The trouble in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, broke out on 3 August, during which police were pelted with missiles, including metal poles and bricks.

Rioters also targeted the Holiday Inn Express in Tamworth on 4 August, and started a fire at the hotel, which was believed to have been housing asylum seekers.

The disorder was part of a wave of protests and riots that swept the UK in the wake of the Southport stabbings in July.
