Disruption is expected on some rail services until the end of the day after a fire on a railway embankment in Birmingham.

The blaze next to the track at Aston damaged railway signalling cables and vegetation, said West Midlands Fire Service.

As a result some lines were closed with trains unable to run between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent Valley and Walsall, warned Network Rail., external

Tickets for affected services could be used with other rail operators and on some National Express services at no extra cost, it added.

The routes affected are between Redditch and Four Oaks, between Bromsgrove and Lichfield Trent Valley and between Walsall and Wolverhampton.

The fire, which has been extinguished, caused "major disruption" on the Cross City line, Network Rail said.

Passengers were thanked for their patience as engineers worked on-site in Aston to investigate the issue.

British Transport Police has confirmed that the fire, which broke out at 09:30 BST on Friday, is not being treated as a criminal offence.
