Student flats and a new college building are recommended for approval despite opposition from nearby residents.

Plans for two student blocks and a facility for the National Mathematics and Science College were lodged with Coventry City Council earlier this year.

The 248-bed building would go on 'The Oaks' on Westwood Business Park, where many other student flats have been built in the last few years.

Concerns include the “over concentration of students,” noise, anti-social behaviour and an increase in the fear of crime.

Almost a dozen residents and two councillors have objected to the plans, according to a council report.

But planning officers said the proposals would not significantly affect neighbours, and could also have benefits.

Regarding concerns of anti-social behaviour and crime, the report said West Midlands Police did not object to the plans, and the block would be managed 24/7.

Developers have agreed to pay £373,416.45 towards services and infrastructure if the scheme goes ahead, the report adds.

The scheme goes before a council planning committee on 14 December.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
