Two people have been arrested in connection with an "unexplained" death at house in Darlington.
Durham Police said they were called to a property in Geneva Road at about 23:00 BST on Friday.
The force said: "Paramedics also attended, but sadly a female died shortly after their arrival."
Those being held remain in custody, police said, in what has been described as "an isolated incident".
It said officers would be in the area throughout the day to "reassure the community".
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death, which is currently being treated as unexplained," the force added.
A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed they had attended the scene.
"We sent five resources in total including a doctor and a specialist paramedic," a spokesman said.
