The granddaughter of an "incredible" athlete who died after a fatal crash has thanked hundreds of runners who have joined forces to honour her grandad's life.

Arthur Whiston died on 5 July after being involved in a crash in Argents Lane, near West Bergholt, Essex, while cycling home from a post-run coffee with his running club teammates.

Chantelle Fisher said she had been blown away by the outpouring of love for the 73-year-old, including tributes at five Parkrun events across Essex.

Essex Police is continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward after a 69-year-old woman from Colchester who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving was released under investigation.

Ms Fisher, 28, said her inbox had been flooded with photos and memories of her grandad.

"I think deep down he knew how popular he was but he was modest and would never brag about it," she said.

"He didn't believe he was this big influential person but it's quite clear to see that's what he was."

Mr Whiston served in the British Army for 22 years and ran competitively for the Colchester Harriers Athletics Club for more than 20 years.

He also regularly took part in social runs with the Running Colchester club.

Jenny Kaye had run with Mr Whiston on the day of the crash and said her friend was "pivotal" to the running community in Essex.

"I don't think Arthur realised how much we cared about him," the 42-year-old said.

Fellow runner Amber Fox-Hammond, 36, continued: "He was an incredible runner and even in his 70s he was able to do a sub-25 minute 5km (3.1 miles) but he'd never rub it in people's faces he was a fast runner.

"He used to offer support to everyone and would be happy to talk to anyone new as well as people he knew."
