A runner has proposed to his girlfriend a mile from the finishing line of the London Marathon.

Luke Carpenter from Wolverhampton was running the marathon to raise money for children’s charity Barnardo’s.

He got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend of 5 years, Alice Reynolds, as she cheered.

A Barnardo’s volunteer captured the moment Mr Carpenter went down on one knee before completing the race.

Barnardo’s chief executive Lynn Perry MBE said:

“Congratulations to Luke and Alice on their engagement! I wonder what made Luke’s heart beat faster; running the marathon or popping the question?”

Mr Carpenter thanked Barnardo’s staff who had helped him plan the big moment and keep it a secret.

“It’s a day we’ll remember forever,” he said.

“It was crazy having to carry on running after she said yes, but it gave me an extra boost to get to the finish line!”
