Armed forces personnel will be honoured at Remembrance Sunday services across the West Midlands next week.

Thousands of people, including veterans and current servicemen and women, will attend events, with many involved in a parade ahead of the nationwide two-minute silence at 11:00 GMT.

Large-scale services will be held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire and in Birmingham city centre, along with smaller events in towns and villages.

Road closures and changes to parking or public transport arrangements will be in place on Sunday 9 November and people are encouraged to check council websites for the latest information. What follows is information on the events planned for where you live...

Birmingham

Birmingham's annual service will begin on Colmore Row, opposite St Philip's Cathedral, at about 10:15 GMT on Sunday 9 November, with music from the Salvation Army Band and city council choir.

The service will be attended by military veterans and representatives from the armed forces.

It will include marching from uniformed contingents and various associations, before the two-minute silence at 11:00 GMT.

The silence will be followed by a bugler playing the Reveille.

Coventry and Warwickshire

Coventry's Remembrance Sunday event will take place as part of its annual peace festival – an event promoting peace, tolerance and friendship.

It will also come as the city marks the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz.

The parade itself will take place at the cenotaph in War Memorial Park, from 11:00 to 13:00 GMT.

It will be attended by the lord mayor and Bishop of Coventry, alongside serving and retired members of the armed forces. It will then be followed by a ceremony at London Road Cemetery.

Other events are scheduled to take place in Warwick, Leamington, Kenilworth, Nuneaton and Whitnash.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire

In Worcester, a parade will begin at the Cornmarket at 09:15 GMT and will make its way down Mealcheapen Street, St Swithun's Street and High Street before arriving at the cathedral.

The city's mayor will also lead a procession from the Guildhall to the cathedral ahead of the service, which is due to start at 10:00 and finish at about 10:40 GMT before the two-minute silence is observed.

Hereford's annual parade and service will be held at the war memorial on St Peter's Square from 11:00 GMT, with people urged to gather on the square ahead of the two minutes' silence.

The parade will include representatives from local veterans' organisations, cadet forces, emergency services and community groups.

There will also be a number of events held across Malvern Hills, including Upton-upon-Severn, Tenbury Wells, Great Malvern and Malvern Wells.

Shropshire

In Shrewsbury, the parade will begin at the castle at about 10:30 before a service is held at the war memorial in the Quarry from about 10:50 GMT.

It will be attended by the mayor, civic dignitaries, veterans, serving armed forces personnel, cadets and local organisations.

The service will be followed by the traditional laying of wreaths.

A parade will also be held in Madeley, Telford, from 10:30, starting from the bottom of High Street ahead of an act of remembrance at the town's war memorial from 10:45 GMT.

Staffordshire

The National Arboretum, in Alrewas, will be hosting a service and have encouraged visitors to arrive at the site by 10:00 GMT.

It will take place at the armed forces memorial and will also be relayed on a large screen in Heroes' Square.

A parade and service will also be held at the Collegiate Church of St Mary, from 10:45 to 13:00 GMT.

There will be an open act of remembrance in Victoria Square, which will include a rendition of the last post, a two-minute silence at 11:00 and the laying of wreaths at the war memorial, followed by a march through the town centre.

Other services taking place include those in Stoke-on-Trent, Leek, Biddulph and Cheadle.

Wolverhampton and Black Country

A parade and service will be held in Wolverhampton city centre and will involve a two-minute silence at 11:00 GMT before a wreath laying at the cenotaph in St Peter's Square.

In Walsall, a parade will march through the town centre from about 10:25 before a service is held at the cenotaph in Bradford Place.

The following services, which will be held from 10:30 and 11:30 GMT, will be held across Sandwell:

  • Smethwick - Smethwick Council House

  • Tipton - Victoria Park

  • Wednesbury - Memorial Gardens
