Police powers will be introduced for parts of Nottingham this weekend to tackle anti-social street racing and car cruising.

From 19:00 BST on Saturday a dispersal order will be in force along Daleside Road in Sneinton and Colwick and the A453 in Clifton.

Nottinghamshire Police said there has been a recent increase in drivers using their vehicles to speed, make excessive noise and drive aggressively in the two areas.

A previous order was enforced in April in Daleside Road over similar concerns.

The order will give officers the power to seize vehicles and remove spectators gathering on the roadsides.

Officers can also take actions including making arrests, issuing fines and handing out written warnings.

'Lives at risk'

Insp Steve Dalby said: “This behaviour is unacceptable and is causing alarm and distress to other road users and those living in the area. It is also extremely dangerous and puts people’s lives at risk.

“We are working closely with Nottingham City Council to address this behaviour and to make sure residents and visitors feel safe.

“To this end, officers will be in the area over the weekend both visibly and covertly and will be taking action as necessary to address residents’ concerns.”

The 35-hour order will last until 06:00 on Monday.

Failing to comply with the dispersal order is a criminal offence.

Anyone returning after being moved on can be arrested and officers can return anyone under the age of 16 to their home address.
