A 27-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being stabbed in the face, police said.
At about 03:00 BST on Saturday, armed police, dog units and paramedics responded to reports of a stabbing in Watergall, Bretton, in Peterborough.
Cambridgeshire Police said a man remains in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries
A suspect wearing a balaclava ran from the scene immediately after the attack, the force said.
Some residents told the BBC they were "woken up with a loud commotion" and saw "dozens of police cars flashing their lights".
One resident said "there was a lot of blood everywhere" on the road and the street was "taped off by the police".
"The clean up took place and you can still see the faded [blood] marks," another person said.
A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “An investigation is ongoing and additional patrols are being carried out in the area. No arrests have yet been made.”
Anyone with information has been asked to contact the force.
Police said at this stage there is no evidence to suggest it was a racially motivated attack.
