Traffic calming measures will be installed on a street in a city following a number of road incidents.

Peterborough City Council plans to place three pairs of speed cushions - a horizontal speed reduction method, external - in Elmfield Road, close to the junction with Central Avenue.

The plan is in response to minor traffic incidents in the area. The authority said that its officers met with residents and councillors at the site and agreed that speed reduction measures would help prevent further incidents.

Mohammed Jamil, a Labour councillor and cabinet member for environment and transport, called it a “positive step” towards addressing speeding concerns in the area.

'Road safety'

Speed cushions have had a positive effect on reducing vehicle speeds and associated road traffic incidents in other locations in Peterborough.

The works are scheduled to start on 22 July and will be carried out by Milestone Infrastructure Limited, the authority's highways partner.

Mr Jamil said: "Installing speed reduction measures in a location with known issues with speeding and careless driving is a positive step for local residents.

"We have a number of locations in the city where similar measures have been used, including newly-installed cushions in Gunthorpe Ridings, that have received positive feedback.

"The speed cushions will be an effective tool in managing careless driving and will be a significant step to improving road safety in the area. I look forward to seeing them installed and I am confident they will have a positive effect."

While the work is carried out, Garton End Road and Elmfield Road will be closed between its junctions with Newark Avenue and Central Avenue from 22-30 July.

Elmfield Road will also be closed between Dogsthorpe Road and Central Avenue between 31 July and 16 August, but the council said access for residents will be maintained.
