A warning has been issued to garage owners in Surrey over a series of burglaries.

Surrey Police said garages had been targeted due to their poor security and the increased difficulty in breaking into homes themselves.

The force is urging residents to ensure their garages have secure doors, that they are locked and that they have alarms installed.

A spokesperson said older garages with a single locking point were "very easy to open or bend, and are therefore easy targets for thieves".

"There is also a tendency to keep more valuable items in the garage aside from just cars, such as cycles, e-bikes, motorbikes, garden equipment, freezers, fishing tackle and tools," they added.

"These have increasingly become a target for burglars."

Meanwhile, police also urged builders and tradespeople with valuable tools to lock their equipment in a secured garage or safe place overnight to stop their vans from being broken into.
